Resilience Cafe

Resilience Cafe was about writing an essay between two resilient people. One from history and a community member that relates to the historic person. I chose Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. I couldn't find a community member so I just related two historic people. Then you had to create an art piece that represents both people, and then share it with other people at Resilience Cafe night.

Here is my Essay:

"If you're born in America with a black skin, you're born in prison."-Malcolm X Two men who strongly believed in equal rights, and who drastically changed history were Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
Martin Luther King Jr. was resilient because of his determination to change what he thought was truly unfair. "An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law." He went to jail multiple times, because he was leading peaceful protest in his refusal to accept unjust laws. He was very calm through this process. Other people, if they were in his position, may have used violence to solve the injustice. However, Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t believe that violence was the answer. His actions on non-violent protests led to his own death, getting sprayed by a fire hose, going to jail several times. People went through so much pain because they believed that Martin Luther King Jr. would lead them to equal rights and they felt the pain and suffering was worth it in the end.
As Martin Luther King Jr. was resilient during that time, Malcolm X was resilient, as well. Malcolm X started off his life strong, however many things brought him down. He was abused by Whites and had to deal with many family problems and the K.K.K (Ku Klux Klan, a group of white that use violence to get rid of African American) . He graduated junior high in the top of his class. But when a teacher that he looked up told him that his dream of being a lawyer was "no realistic goal for a nigger”, he dropped out of school and ended up doing crimes. Burglary sent him to 10 years of jail time. However, after that time, he got interested in Elijah Muhammad’s teachings. He taught that Blacks were the original people on earth and that blacks were tricked out of the power and rank. Since then, he got his sense back, and followed Elijah’s teachings and preached to many people. He soon became the minister/spokesperson of NOI(Nation of Islam), an organization that believes that God will be the world’s government. Malcolm X bounced back up from his hard times during his young life into a man that impacted history.
Both, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were icons of African-American history. Their speeches were very powerful and moved many people, and they both had the dream of being a lawyer. They both acted for equal rights. I learned from both of these inspirational people that you should never just waste something valuable, and be grateful of what you have in front of you now. Also to dream big, because you never know what you could do. Martin Luther King Jr. started off just wanting to be a lawyer, but he never knew that his outcome of his effort (as well as other people) would turn out like this. I think that from learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X and what they’ve done, I think that working hard for something you believe in, and putting effort in it will be worth the while in the end.
Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were two strong people. They both have a different history but they both had a dream of changing the world towards equal rights. They were hero’s of the Civil Rights movement and are well known, because of they’re determination.

ART PIECE

=EQUAL=

My artpiece represents equality, because of Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X. They both believed that all races should be equal, but they infulenced it in different ways. In the art piece, the two sticks represents an equal sign, each box having pictures of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

Reflection of the Trial (Lord of the Flies)

My strengths in this project, was that I could think of a good answer for the cross examination. I had a big challenge on just concentrating on the project and not getting side-tracked.

To prepare for this trial, i worked with the prosecutors to think of good questions and answers to make Jack guilty of manslaughter. For example, Michael asked what condition Simon and Piggy was. So i answered it as many deep cuts, and bruises. And that to do that much damage to a body, you need a handful of people.

For my challenges, I said that i couldn't concentrate. If you watched the trial, I did answer questions well, however when it was a cross examination...I did poorly on some questions. When Hunter(defense)asked me what medical school i graduated from, i was froze, and said a stupid answer. The reason why I froze, was because I fully did NOT create my character(medical examiner). If i did what I what i should have done , and concentrated on finishing my character biography, i wouldnt have froze up there and made it believe that I wasnt a very good medical examiner.

I think that i should get around a B-A, because though i did some parts poorly. I did do what i had to do. I came somewhat prepared, and I knew what I was supose to say.

Publishing Project

Title: My boyfriend, her boyfriend?
Author: Angela Kang
Genre: Teen issues
Pages: 4 pages
Mentor Texts:

The book Secret Santa by Sabrina James inspired me to write a my story about teen issues. The book is about a girl names Noelle that likes a guy named Charlie(of course one of the popular guys in school), so she hopes to get some way to be with him. But at school an event comes up(SECRET SANTA) and she hopes to draw his name to get a chance to tell him that she likes him during the present giving. But when she picked out a name, she didn't get him but got Jake, Charlie's younger brother! On the other hand, Jake has Noelle's name, but she thinks Charlie is the one giving her the gifts. So she goes through many problems trying to prevent girls from going after Charlie, when he isn't interested in her at all.

Audience: For my story, i think the audience should be youth/teens. I don't young students would really understand it that much. Also any people that like stories involving teen problems.

Writing Process: For this writing, I had a hard time thinking of an idea, but once i got my basic storyline it was easier. I started my idea as a fantasy story, but I didn't have much of an imagination so I just talked with my friends. I had an long talk with vanessa, and so I had the genre of teen issues. I first started off with a rough draft, it was pretty easy. I had bullet points of how I wanted to story to go. Then went through a couple people and did the revision activity, where your partner reads your story and writes what the expostion, rising action, climax, falling action, and denoument of your story. I did that with my friends, then Ms. Staff did too. Then revised it, then turned it in and got feedback from Ms. Staff. I had a lot of grammer problems so i revised it one last time. Now I 3 drafts inculding my final :)

Publishing Process: Vanessa and I combined our two stories together into one book. We got a binder, then put our story in plastic sheet covers and also created our title pages for our story, and a front cover for our book.

Reflection of Featurecast from the Past!

Cold war;the Cuban missile crisis

Concepts i learned:

1. Cuban missile crisis- It was a standoff between Russia and the US. They were once respected allies, but later on they became enemies. The cuban missile crisis was one of the events that happened during the cold war.

2. No missiles were actually launched. JFK's careful actions ended this crisis. He threatened Cuba that if any missiles are launched that US will take action, and also putting a blockade on Cuba helped the problem resolve.

Challenges:

Finding a certain topic on the cold war to write about, I couldn't find a man topic, but tehn Mr. Anthony helped me so i ended up doing it on the missile crisis.

Real world significance:

Learning major events in history is realted to the real world, because you need to know history for college, and you'll end up needing to know this and being able to explain. Also learning how to write a featured article is important, because if you ever become a writer your gonna have to know how to write different types of writing.
